About
Totally TIVA
Totally TIVA started in 1997 at the Southern General
Hospital in Glasgow, as 'TIVA for Trainees'. Consultant Anaesthetists
were being invited to attend TIVA Meetings at HCI International Medical
Centre, Clydebank, for education and demonstrations of Diprifusor™
TCI. There was no similar provision for Anaesthetists in Training.
Mr
Graham Sunderland, Consultant Colo-Rectal Surgeon at SGH
,
had established a live-link facility in a Day Surgery Theatre. The
system had a high fidelity camera, and allowed a choice of five inputs
to be sent to remote lecture theatres - with 2-way sound. The composite
video output from Datex-Ohmeda CardioCap and Ultima monitors allowed
their screens to be projected live in the Lecture Theatre - no secrets!
The first meeting was attended by trainees from the West
of Scotland, and Dr Douglas Russell demonstrated TIVA techniques live
from the Operating Theatre. Dr Iain Glen presented "Propofol - from
Test-tube to TCI", Mr Alan McIlroy & Mr Brendan Kirk oversaw the
technical aspects, and the show was anchored in the Walton Conference
Centre by Professor Gavin Kenny.
Over the years the meeting expanded to welcome
anaesthetists of all grades & additional speakers, outgrew its venue, and moved to the Royal
College of Physicians & Surgeons in Glasgow. Professor John Sear arrived
to Chair. In 2007 Totally TIVA moved to London, using recorded video
material. A subsequent meeting was in Leeds.
Feedback from delegates has always been extremely
positive - and has been taken into account over the years to provide
the highest standards of Medical Education and hence build the success of
Totally TIVA.
A warm welcome is extended to delegates wishing to
develop an interest in Intravenous Anaesthesia.
